One day a machine that coats Cheetos with their flavouring broke down leaving some Cheetos unseasoned. Richard took some of these plain Cheetos home and added his own seasoning inspired by elote, a Mexican street food made with corn, salt, butter, chilli powder, cotija cheese, mayo and lime juice.
Richard noticed Frito-Lay did not have any snacks specifically made for Latino customers. Encouraged by his family and friends who loved his spicy Cheetos he decided to share his idea with his bosses.
The story goes that when Richard called the company’s headquarters he reached the assistant of Enrico the CEO of PepsiCo which owns Frito-Lay. He introduced himself as a janitor from one of their California plants and she put him through to CEO Roger Enrico.
