AA Meeting in Minnesota: The First 30 Days of Sobriety

Deciding to quit drinking is not an easy choice. It is a challenge. But it’s worth it. The first 30 days are the toughest. If you can overcome this, you transform your life. 

 

When you quit alcohol your body and mind, which have become dependent on it, struggle to adjust. This triggers a host of withdrawal symptoms that can overpower you physically and emotionally. But this is a temporary phase. To go through this phase successfully, it’s a smart idea to join a AA meeting in Minnesota. You will get the much-needed support and motivation to continue in your sobriety path. 

 

First 3 days (72 hours)

The first 3 days of quitting alcohol will probably knock you off. You are hit hard by withdrawal symptoms. Their intensity depends on the severity of your addiction. 

 

Nausea, vomiting, anxiety, agitation, sweating, increased heart rate, insomnia, hallucinations, tremors, seizures, delirium tremens – be ready for any of these! It is highly likely that you start drinking again to escape from these symptoms. Don’t. Stay put.

First week

Within a week of continued sobriety, the alcohol concentration in your body reduces rapidly. This brings a fluctuating state of mind and body. One moment, you may feel refreshed. The other moment you may feel depressed or anxious. This is normal. 

 

AA meetings help people handle this phase tactically. You must trick your mind at this phase. Learn new skills. Set a daily routine for everything, including sleeping and eating. Include workouts in your routine. 

 

Now, you are recovering. 

 

Second week

Physical withdrawal symptoms begin to fade. The emotional symptoms are still there. In fact, they might peak. You may begin to question your decision of quitting alcohol. Don’t let your mind play games with you. Be firm in your decision. 

 

Remember the “why” of your decision. Why did you decide to quit drinking? Focus on this. 

 

Third week

Be ready to experience severe mood swings in the third week. Agitation, anger, hopelessness, depression, doubt about your sobriety decision, fear, and more – these emotions will try to pull you back to your alcohol days. 

 

Do not isolate yourselves. Attend meetings regularly. Share how you are feeling at this time. Get guidance from experts at the AA meetings. They will tell you how to cope with mind games. 

 

Fourth week

Be prepared for increased sensitivity, as your body gets rid of toxins and your mind begins to clear. Your senses, which were dulled by alcohol, are now back to normal. You might feel more sensitive and more alert to your surroundings. 

 

Like a snake that sheds old skin and gets a new one, you have shed your old addicted self and become a new sober one. Welcome the new you!
