Insulation is a term that applies to a material that is used to insulate something, most commonly a building. Insulation is a material that acts as a barrier between the inside of your home and a markedly different temperature outside, minimizing heat loss or gain.

The R-value is a measure of resistance to heat. Insulation materials are classified by their R-value. The local climate determines which insulation R-values are recommended for different areas of the home. The recommended R-Values for home insulation are:

  • R-19 for basement walls and crawl spaces
  • Minimum of R-13 for exterior walls
  • R-49 for attics

Different materials have different R-values. The type of material you need depends not only on its effectiveness as an insulator but also on your budget. The different types of available insulations are give below:

*Mineral wool insulation

Mineral wool insulation is primarily created from recycled industrial materials such as slag (a byproduct of steel and other metal smelting), rock, or glass. As with fiberglass insulation, mineral wool can be installed in batt or blown material.

One of the main advantages of mineral wool insulation is its resistance to fire. It is also an effective sound absorber.

However, mineral wool has poor resistance to moisture. Although it’s not as big of a problem in dry areas, it would be in the wetter parts of the country. It’s important to keep this drawback in mind; you don’t want to risk mold and mildew growing on your insulation.

*Fiberglass insulation

Fiberglass insulation is inexpensive and reliable. It’s also fire-resistant and moisture-resistant. It’s no surprise, then, that fiberglass is the most common material for insulating houses. Commonly installed as batts or rolls, fiberglass insulation can also be blown into spaces in your home for maximum effectiveness.

Although extremely effective when installed correctly, poorly installed fiberglass insulation is inefficient. Fiberglass also has a lower R-value compared to other insulation materials.

*Cellulose insulation

Another sustainable material, cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper. Cellulose insulation is a loose-fill material that is blown into wall cavities. It’s been treated to resist fire.

The R-value of cellulose insulation is very often higher than that of fiberglass insulation. The price is also competitive with fiberglass. Unfortunately, cellulose insulation settles over time and degrades when exposed to moisture, gradually losing its functionality.

*Spray foam insulation

With the highest R-value of any insulation material and resistance to air and moisture buildup, polyurethane foam insulation is sprayed onto the walls of your home and expands to fill even the smallest cracks.

Cost tends to be the factor that causes homeowners to opt for materials other than spray foam insulation. However, while spray foam tends to be more expensive than other options on the market, it’s important to balance the cost of installation with the long-term energy savings.
