It is situated approximately 25 miles north of San Diego, between Solana Beach and Carlsbad, and about 95 miles south of Los Angeles. As of the 2020 census, Encinitas had a population of 62,007. After Mexican independence, the land was granted to Andrés Ybarra in 1842 to build Rancho Las Encinitas, from which the city got its name, which means “little oaks” in Spanish.
