5 Strategies for Making the Most of Your Private Islands Vacation 2023

Getting time to relax and unwind is crucial in the current digital and fast-paced world. What better way to do this than ditching the mainland and heading to a private island for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation?

While private islands may cost more, they are worth the splurge, and you get unparalleled luxury, optimum privacy, and unspoiled natural beauty.

Adequate preparation is vital to enjoying every bit of the sugary-shored idyllic isles. From choosing a suitable island to packing appropriately and connecting with nature, a flawless escape is a byproduct of good planning and research.

Whether you are heading to Islas Secas in Panama, Amilla in Maldives, or Lizard Island in Australia, here are five strategies for making the most of your private island vacation.

1. Pick the Best Island

With countless private islands across the globe, the best one depends on your unique needs and budget. The best cruise-line private islands are glamorous, peaceful, luxurious, and off-limits to others.

Choose an island depending on the purpose of the vacation, location, cost, and amenities. Concerning the kind of vacation, is it a couple’s getaway, family travel, or solo travel? What activities would you like to engage in at the destination; water sports, island hopping, or nightlife?

For instance, if you want a couple’s getaway or honeymoon, you want a discreet island with impressive scenery and top-notch amenities. In this case, Velaa Private Island, Maldives, Ambergris Cay, Turks and Caicos, and Islas Secas, Panama, are good choices. For family travel, you want a family-friendly island with tons of fun kids’ activities and amenities.

When choosing a private island, consider the location. Most private islands are located in remote destinations, thus challenging to get to using public transportation. You need a plane, helicopter, cruise, or boat to access them.

2. Consider the Climate

Weather can make or break your private island vacation. According to an article published in the International Journal of Tourism Research, good weather is the most frequently cited positive memory of a holiday. Consequently, it is best practice to know the weather condition of the private island before booking so you opt for the ideal time.

Many tropical islands have inclement weather and monsoon seasons characterized by hurricanes and heavy rains. Visiting these islands during such seasons limits the activities you can engage in and hinders maximum enjoyment.

For example, if you opt for a private island in the Maldives, the best time to visit is between November and April. The climate is warm and sunny during this time, and you can enjoy peaceful beach walks, sunbathing, and water sports. The worst time for a Maldives vacation is during the monsoon period due to the heavy rains and strong winds.

3. Pack Smart

Private island vacations are enjoyable, from the sandy beaches to the crystal blue waters and graceful palm trees. However, since most are in remote regions, you must carry necessities or risk running out of supplies. You don’t want to run up and down the island searching for basics instead of hanging by the pool or soaking in the stunning scenery.

The most important things to carry are sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, a cooling towel, a universal travel adaptor, activated charcoal, and a water bottle with a built-in filter. Do not forget a sturdy and waterproof beach bag to carry your stuff while you lounge by the beach.

While the sun is a huge attraction in private islands, it can wreak havoc on your skin and health. It can leave you dehydrated and with severe sunburns and heat rash. Also, the sun and salt can damage your hair, so tag your live-in conditioner.

Notably, pack the right clothes for your private island vacation. Light casuals, beach wear, flip flops, and a few party attires will suffice.

4. Carry Cash

Most people prefer using credit cards over cash for security purposes when traveling. However, digital money may not be applicable when heading to a private island. Some islands and small establishments only accept cash, and credit cards don’t apply.

Similarly, banks and ATMS can be difficult to find in certain islands. Therefore, carry cash to transact effectively.

If headed to a foreign country, exchange currencies before your trip. It will spare you the hassle of locating money exchangers in your destination and save money in huge exchange fees. Carrying cash lets you access spontaneous opportunities such as buying a souvenir and sightseeing. Also, you have cash for transport, tips, and emergencies.

5. Explore Beyond the Beach

Besides enjoying the beach, explore the private island and connect with nature. You can take nature walks, hike in the tropical forests, or camp at the mountainside. However, ensure you have a tour guide for optimal safety and enjoyment.

Other activities you can engage in include flyboarding, golf, kitesurfing, diving, beach volleyball, fishing, and watching sunrise and sunset. Fine dining, bird watching, lounging, sailing, and dolphin excursions should also be in your itinerary. In addition, get some therapeutic and rejuvenating facial and body treatments for the ultimate relaxation.

Private islands are not an unattainable luxury earmarked for Arab princes, Hollywood stars, and Russian tycoons. From relaxing at the beach to enjoying the beautiful scenery, dancing under the stars, snorkeling, and boating, a private island vacation is exceptional.

Use the above strategies to make your private island vacation twice as nice!
