What Are the Main Causes of Inflammation of the Skin?

The inflammation of the skin is part of the immune response. Whenever a foreign invader enters the body, the immune system is alerted and responds by sending white blood cells to the injury site. The swelling or inflamed skin we see is a result of this response. Symptoms of inflammation include pain, redness of the skin, heat, swelling, and in most cases, itching.

Causes or Triggers of Skin Inflammation

The cause of inflammatory skin disease also goes by the name of trigger, may be acute. It could be an allergy, a contracted virus, a fungal infection, or a bacterial infection. These tend to run their course, and the inflammation eventually heals on its own.

However, the inflammation can also be chronic, which can be an autoimmune disease. One example is psoriasis.

Most inflammation on the skin is treatable, though it depends on the severity of the condition and, more often, whether that inflammation is acute or chronic. Here are various causes of skin inflammation.

1.     Infection

When bacteria or other foreign stimuli enter your body through a cut or a tear in your skin, it causes an infection. Skin infections are more likely to occur in people who already have compromised immune systems. There are other factors that raise the risk of developing a disease, like obesity, diabetes, poor circulation, and old age. While some infections can only affect a specific area of the skin, others can affect the other skin layers as well and perhaps even reach muscle and tissue if not treated properly.

There are a lot of bacteria-related infections, like:

  • Impetigo,
  • cellulitis
  • and staphylococcal infections.

On the other hand, viral infections are due to contracting a virus, include warts and shingles. Fungus leads to fungal infections like athlete’s foot. In addition, parasitic infections like lice are widespread and tend to have an outbreak.

2.     Immune Dysfunction

People with autoimmune diseases do not have a properly functioning immune system. In this case, the immune system ends up attacking the healthy cells as well as the damaged cells as it is unable to tell the difference between them.

Inflammation is usually the first identifier that something is wrong, and you may need to get a check-up. The immune disease, which includes inflammation as a symptom, are:

  • psoriasis,
  • celiac disease
  • and lupus.

3.     Allergies

An allergic reaction occurs when you eat or drink something that your body rejects or cannot consume based on the immunity built in your body.

The most common allergic reaction that occurs in humans is hives and eczema. Allergic reactions, some under the type of cute inflammation. Given how sensitive your skin is and how quickly it reacts when coming into contact with any object, you could develop an allergic reaction to household items like laundry detergent or rough clothes, or substances like various plants and latex.

4.     Photosensitivity

Also goes by the name of sun allergy is, as the name suggests, an immune response to exposure to the sun. If you are photosensitive, it means that the regular exposure that a human body gets on a daily basis is considered a foreign invader and thus sends white blood cells to take care of it.

This condition may also be the result of certain medications and skincare products. Remaining photosensitive over a long period can raise the risk of UV damage, which can cause permanent damage. People with this condition also have a higher risk of developing skin cancer.

5.     Heat Rash

This is common among children. The leading cause is due to the clogging of sweat glands. When our body cannot release sufficient heat through sweating, we tend to overheat, and thus a heat rash forms.

This can occur under several conditions, like constant exposure to the sun, applying ointments or skin products to your body that may not suit it, and blocking the sweat glands. Intense and prolonged exercise duration can also cause the skin to form heat rashes. It usually appears as a pale pink rash and numerous tiny bumps. So, if you’re wondering how to get rid of inflammation, you need to talk with a dermatologist.

You often have the feeling of pins and needles over inflamed skin. Heat rash tends to be more common around the area of the neck, chest, and upper back.

The Way Forward

In all, skin inflammation is one of those diseases that you can control through proper treatment and care. Depending on the type as well as the intensity of the inflammation, it is best to consult your doctor on a regular basis. Many skin inflammations are treatable, often at home, but go to your doctor first. Take care and eat healthily!
