Do spiders have insects?
Arachnids are spiders. They are different from insects by having just two parts of the body and have eight legs instead of six or eight eyes (two for insects) and spinnerets on their abdomens which produce silk.
How many spiders do you know that you don’t see?
An examination of an uninvolved grassy field located in Sussex discovered 5.5 millions of spiders for every one hectare.
How many spiders can you count in a typical house?
There aren’t any accurate statistics about the amount of spiders that live in the typical home, however there are many spiders that are sure to enjoy their time within your home. They include the daddy-long-legs-spider Pholcus Phalangioides that creates scruffy webs that are found in corners of cupboards and rooms and the mouse spider Scotophaeus blackwalli is a stronger and velvety species that scurries across the walls at night.
However, the term ‘house spider is typically reserved for those belonging to the genera Tegenaria, which are not seen in webs of tubes until autumn when the males with leaner bodies wander around our homes to search for the larger females, who are more active and sedentary.
Four species are common in British homes, but they can be difficult to distinguish from one another, and arachnophobes are sure to be thrilled to learn that a fifth species is now to be making its way into the UK in mainland Europe.

How do spiders create silk?
Spider silk begins inside the glands of silk as a liquid gel made of long chains of protein that are funnelled down an ever-tinier tube. As the tube shrinks it is coated with the mix (to give it a sticky appearance as well as water-resistance, for instance) before it is released through tiny spigots (devices which control fluid flow) in the spider’s spinnerets.
The gel is only solidified when stretched. Rather than being squeezed out as toothpaste it is pulled out through a valve that resembles a motor in every spigot.
Silk glands creates a variety of fibers that have different characteristics that are used to perform specific tasks such as dragline, snare egg case or web support.
Do all spiders create webs?
Only 17 of the 37 spider families use webs to catch their prey. Webs can be found in many varieties ranging from the popular orb webs of garden spiders and their cousins as well as the less popular tangle webs of daddy-long-legs spiders.
Certain kinds of webs are durable structures, like funnel webs that are often large of house spiders that are large, for instance, can endure for years and house many different types of occupants.
Contrary to orb webs made by only 4 families that comprise British spiders are much more fragile. Rain and wind affect their structure, and the coating of glue of the thread that traps flying insects is destroyed by dust and pollen. The webs are usually rebuilt each at night, which requires the production of around 20 meters of silk.
