How Many Types of Smoke detectors are Available?

Smoke alarms are developed to give early warning for a fire implying ordinary combustible materials that are anticipated to develop via perceptible incipient and/or glowing stage.

The density, volume, and type of smoke produced during the fire development process will widely depending on the oxygen available and the fuels. During the smoldering stage and ignition (incipient) stage, a larger volume of visible smoke is produced.

Despite the ready access to low cost and at the time, exposure to fire, free smoke detectors, and smoke is responsible for billions of dollars in property damage and thousands of deaths each year. However, it’s a difficult task for many owners to figure out what type of wifi smoke detector is best and where to install the devices.

Basic Types of Smoke Detectors

Ionization and photoelectric are two basic types of smoke detectors that are used commonly.

Ionization Detectors

Ionization detector encompasses a small radiation source that produces electrically charged air molecules. These ions permit a flow of electric current in a chamber. The smoke particles attach to ions when they enter the chamber, and reducing current flow. The alarm gets activated when a change in current occurs.

Photoelectric Smoke Detectors

Photoelectric smoke detector has two categories; beam and light scattering. A collimating lens system, a light source, and a photosensitive cell are the elements of beam and light scattering smoker detectors. During the combustion process, the aerosol is produced which affects the transmission of light as they pass through the air.

The combination of an air mixture with aerosol causes two states that can be used to detect the presence of a fire. The states are; the reduction in light intensity integrated over a beam path length and the scattering of the light (such as the Tyndall effect) in different angles to the beam path.

Beam Type Smoke Detectors

A light beam carries out under the principle of obscuration. It is directed at a photocell. The receiver accepts the beam at a predetermined sensitivity level. Whenever smoke interferes with the beam, the radiation dropping below a certain level of the receiver and starts launching a signal.

Light Scattering Smoke Detectors (Tyndall Principle)

This type has the potential to detect smoke by sensing the light scattered by smoke particles. When smoke particles enter the device, they reflect light from a small lamp or LED in the detector. Some of the reflected light strikes a photocell which generates an electric current. The intensity of the electric current increases as more and more particles enter in the device and more light strikes the photocell. The detector’s circuit enables the alarm when the smoke particles are sufficiently close to the given amount of light.
